New school safety resource aims to support California’s most marginalized young people

A new toolkit from the Children’s Partnership’s All In For Safe Schools — a California-based campaign bringing together TK-12 nonprofit leaders to support educators in creating safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environments — offers a comprehensive hub designed to help educators implement safe, inclusive practices, with clear “Know Your Rights” guidance.

The latest information aims to help boost meaningful support for students from immigrant families, LGBTQ+ students and other historically marginalized communities, which in turn improves school climates for all youth.

“This toolkit brings together key strategies and trusted resources to help educators, administrators, and community partners create inclusive environments where all students can thrive,” the resource states. “By taking proactive steps — such as adopting healing-centered practices, ensuring language access, and strengthening culturally responsive teaching — schools can become sanctuaries of learning and healing for every student, regardless of background, identity, or circumstance.”

The toolkit is organized into three categories: student rights and resources, educator rights and resources, and frequently asked questions.

The student rights and resources sections notes that “students are entitled to a safe, inclusive learning environment free from discrimination, harassment, or unequal treatment,” and that “upholding these rights is critical for student well-being, academic success, and fostering a culture of equity.”

Local educational agencies can safeguard student rights by reviewing and implementing their nondiscrimination and equity policies, ensuring discipline practices are fair and consistent, and promoting student voice and civic engagement opportunities, among other strategies.

Additional resources include:

  • Strategies to protect and support students from immigrant families and LGBTQ+ students, as well as warning signs.
  • Student- and family-centered tools to promote advocacy, wellness and belonging.
  • Actionable guidance, connections to support networks and information on privacy rights and digital protection.
