Strengthening prevention efforts to protect children

Creating safe schools requires ongoing commitment. Strong policies, informed staff and a shared understanding of responsibility all play a role in preventing child abuse and supporting student well-being. During Child Abuse Prevention Month, Keenan works alongside the ReLiEF Joint Powers Authority (JPA) and CSBA to help districts reinforce these critical efforts with practical, ready-to-use resources.

Through this partnership, all local educational agencies have access to a comprehensive Child Abuse Prevention Month resource page. The page includes guidance on policies, staff training tools and materials designed to raise awareness across school communities. These resources are intended to support LEAs at every stage, whether updating procedures or strengthening prevention strategies already in place.

LEAs are also encouraged to view the video, “5 Things You Should Know About Child Abuse Prevention,” located on the resource page. (LEAs that participate in a Keenan-managed program are eligible for a raffle opportunity after viewing the video.)

Last year’s participation highlighted a strong, collective focus on prevention across California LEAs. More than 1,300 individuals viewed the “Recognizing Grooming Behaviors” video, over 35 LEAs took part.

LEAs are encouraged to explore the available materials, share them with staff, and use Child Abuse Prevention Month as an opportunity to reinforce conversations around student safety. Reviewing policies, participating in training and promoting awareness are meaningful steps that contribute to long-term prevention. By working together, school communities can continue building environments where students feel safe, supported and able to thrive.
